- How do I achieve a natural looking base?
Firstly make sure you cleanse, tone and moisturise your face well. Use
a foundation that is as close as possible to the colour of your skin.
When you're testing foundation always try a bit on your jaw line rather
than the back of your hand, as the skin on your face might be a slightly
different colour to the skin on the back of your hand. Prescriptives
have a wide range of colours of foundation to choose from. The right
colour should disappear into your skin. Also remember to consider not
only how light or dark your skin is, but whether you have a more yellow
undertone or more pink undertone. Dab small dots of foundation onto
your face and blend it in with either your fingers or a cosmetic sponge.
Blend it right up to your hairline, and under your jaw line. If you
need to cover any blemishes, Max Factor make good concealers. Again
choose one matching the colour of the skin on your face. If you need
to cover dark circles under your eyes use a concealer a shade lighter
than your foundation. Yves Saint Laurent make 'Radiant Touch' concealer
which works on all skin colours. Finally finish off with a loose powder,
this can be either coloured to match your foundation or translucent.
Using a powder puff pat it on to your face gently but firmly. Brush
the excess powder off using a powder brush. Use downward strokes, so
that the tiny hairs on the sides of your face lie flat. To set the make-up
or to make the skin look 'dewy', spritz your face with a fine mist from
a spray atomiser of water. (This last step is optional). Hold the atomiser
at about arms length from your face when you spray it to give an even
coverage.

- How do I make thin lips look fuller?
Use a lip liner pencil to outline your lips a
fraction outside your natural lip line. Paint your lips with a pale
coloured lip gloss, applying a bit extra to the middle of your lower
lip, as this is the part the light hits the most. Pale and glossy colours
will give your lips the illusion of extra fullness.
|
- How do I make full lips look thinner?
Using a thin brush apply concealer (matched to
the colour of the skin on your face) around the edges of your lips,
just inside your natural lip line, to reduce the fullness of the lips
slightly. Then apply a dark matte lipstick inside this outline. Dark
and matte colours will give your lips a minimizing effect.

|
- How do I make eyelashes look longer / thicker
without using false eyelashes?
Firstly apply loose powder over your eyelashes
(while you're applying it to your face). This will help the mascara
to thicken your eyelashes. Curl your top eyelashes with an eyelash curler.
(Clamp them gently for about 30 seconds). Draw a thin line of eyeliner
along your top lash lines, using a colour that matches your mascara.
This will make it appear as though your lashes start higher up, giving
the appearance of longer lashes. Use several coats of an effective mascara.
(I use Lancôme, L'oréal Perfection, Estée Lauder
and Helena Rubinstein, as I find them to be most effective). Afterwards
comb through your eyelashes using an eyelash comb to separate them,
and to remove any clumps of mascara.

|
- How do I give a fair complexion a natural looking
tanned colour?
Apply your usual colour base. (Don't try to use
foundation, concealer or powder darker than your skin colour, or you
will see where it ends at the sides of your face). Find a light coloured
bronzing powder specially for fair skin. (Guerlain make good bronzing
powders). Lightly brush it over your face on the places where the sun
would naturally hit. (i.e. over the bridge of your nose, the tops of
your cheeks, and a little on your forehead.)

|
|
- How do I salvage my over plucked eyebrows?
To rescue overly plucked eyebrows and make them
look thicker whilst still looking natural, try using an eyebrow pencil
that closely matches the colour of your eyebrows (or use the technique
above if your eyebrows are fair). Lightly pencil them in a bit thicker,
being careful to get both eyebrows even and symmetrical to each other.
Finish by brushing your eyebrows upwards and outwards.

|
- How do I use blusher to achieve a natural looking
glow?
Take note of the colour your cheeks turn naturally
after exercising (or when you pinch them). Find a blusher close to that
colour. If you are fair skinned don't go for anything too dark, instead
stick to light rose or baby pinks. For black skin, go for deep brown
reds. For olive skin, go for warm or tawny pinks. Apply using a blusher
brush to the 'apples' of your cheeks. (To find the 'apples' of your
cheeks, smile, and the parts of your cheeks that are raised at the front
of your face are the 'apples'). Be careful to only apply a little at
a time, by tapping the excess colour off of the brush before applying
it. If you apply too much, you can tone it down by applying loose face
powder over the top of it.

|
- How do I do a quick minimal look, since I have
little time?
After cleansing, toning and moisturising, (absolutely
essential to keep your skin fit!), cover any blemishes and / or dark
circles with concealer, apply some mascara to your top lashes (use black
if your hair is black to dark brown, or use brown if your hair is light
brown, red or blonde). Then simply finish off with a lip gloss or lipstick.

|
- How do I accentuate the colour of my eyes?
Apply a colour that will contrast the colour of
your eyes. For GREEN eyes: use pink, purple, lilac, grey or black eyeshadow;
purple, grey or black eyeliner; and purple, grey or black mascara. For
BLUE eyes: use brown, gold, yellow, grey or black eyeshadow; black,
grey or brown eyeliner; and black, grey or brown mascara. For BROWN
eyes: use blue, pink, green, purple, grey or black eyeshadow; blue,
green, purple or black eyeliner; and blue, green, purple or black mascara.
For BLACK eyes: use blue, pink, green, purple, gold, silver, orange,
yellow or white eyeshadow; blue, green or purple eyeliner; and blue,
green or purple mascara. For HAZEL eyes: use blue, pink, purple, lilac,
gold, silver, grey or black eyeshadow, (plus use brown eyeshadow to
bring out the green in your eyes, and use green eyeshadow to bring out
the brown in your eyes). Use blue, black, grey or purple eyeliner, (plus
brown eyeliner to bring out the green in your eyes, and green eyeliner
to bring out the brown in your eyes). Use purple, grey or black mascara,
(plus brown mascara to bring out the green in your eyes, and green mascara
to bring out the brown in your eyes). For GREY eyes: use pink, green,
lilac, purple, yellow and brown eyeshadow, (plus use black eyeshadow
to bring out light grey eyes, and use white eyeshadow to bring out dark
grey eyes). Use purple, green, brown and black eyeliner; and purple,
green, brown and black mascara. For AMBER eyes: use blue, pink, green,
purple, lilac, grey or black eyeshadow; blue, purple, green, grey or
black eyeliner; and blue, purple, green, grey or black mascara. For
TURQUOISE eyes: use lilac, pink, grey, purple, brown or black eyeshadow,
(plus use blue eyeshadow to bring out the green in your eyes, and use
green eyeshadow to bring out the blue in your eyes). Use purple, grey,
brown or black eyeliner, (plus blue eyeliner to bring out the green
in your eyes, and green to bring out the blue in your eyes). Use purple,
grey, brown or black mascara, (plus blue mascara to bring out the green
in your eyes, and green mascara to bring out the blue in your eyes).
For VIOLET eyes: use brown, green, pink, gold, silver, yellow, grey
or black eyeshadow; brown, grey, green or black eyeliner; and brown,
grey, green or black mascara.

|
- How do I make small eyes look larger?
Apply white kohl pencil to the inside rim of your lower eyelids. Then
use a dark colour eyeliner (such as black, brown, or charcoal) above
your top lashes, extending the line outwards beyond the outer corners
of your top eyelids a little, at an angle which is slanting slightly
upwards. Now apply dark eyeliner below your lower lashes, starting from
the middle of your lower eyelids, extending to the outer corners of
your eyes. Curl your top lashes with an eyelash curler to open up the
eye area, and apply mascara to both top and bottom lashes. Individual
false eyelashes applied to the outer halves of your lower eyelids help
make the eyes appear larger, especially if you apply them a bit lower
(about 2mm lower) than your lower lash lines.
|
- How do I make large eyes look smaller?
Apply black or dark coloured kohl pencil to the
inside rim of your lower eyelids. Keep the eyelids nude or use a natural
colour eyeshadow (such as beige or subtle taupe) on the top eyelids
only. Do not curl your eyelashes. Apply mascara to your top eyelashes
only.

- How do I know which colours for eyes, lips and
cheeks are best for me?
Most people either suit the warm colours best,
or the cool colours best. To find out which suit you best, hold something
gold and something silver up against your face in front of the mirror.
If the gold suits your colouring best, then you suit the warm colours.
If the silver suits you best, then you suit the cool colours. Some people
suit both warm and cool colours though. Some of the colours in the warm
category include orangey toned reds, gold, bronzes, coppers, browns,
amber, warm pink and orange. Some of the colours in the cool category
include blue toned reds, purple, blue, silver, white, lilac, cool pink
and emerald green.

|
- How do I make myself look less tired?
If you have dark circles under your eyes, apply
Yves Saint Laurent's 'Radiant Touch', or another concealer which is
one shade lighter than your skin, over this area under your eyes. Fix
this with loose powder. Apply white eyeshadow on your top eyelids right
up to your eyebrows. Apply a touch of light silver eyeshadow to the
inner corners of your eyes. This will make your eyes look brighter.
Curl your eyelashes and apply mascara to both top and bottom eyelashes.
This will make your eyes appear wider. Apply blusher (matched to the
colour your cheeks turn after exercising or when pinched) to the apples
of your cheeks. This will give you a fresh glow. Finally apply lipstick
matched to the blusher to help brighten up your face.
|
- How do I keep the skin below my eyes free of
fallen eyeshadow flecks?
Tap the excess eyeshadow off of the brush before applying it. Apply
a generous dusting of loose face powder to the skin under your eyes
before applying eyeshadow. Any flecks of eyeshadow that fall from your
eyelids when the eyeshadow is being applied will accumulate on top of
this loose face powder. Once you have finished applying the eyeshadow,
simply brush the powder away from under your eyes with a powder brush.
The flecks of coloured eyeshadow on top of it will get brushed away
too, without marking the skin below your eyes.

|
- How do I get my lipstick to last longer?
Use a lipstick with extra staying power, such
as 'Lipfinity' from Max Factor. Before applying your lipstick, apply
lip pencil all over your lips. Blot your lips with tissue after applying
lipstick, then apply a lip coat to lock the lipstick in place.
|
- How do I apply my make-up to make me look younger?
Make sure your skin is well moisturised, with
a moisturiser containing anti-ageing ingredients as well as UV filters,
to protect your skin from the sun's rays that cause ageing. Then apply
a foundation matched to your skin colour which is light diffusing or
age-defying. It will soften the appearance of lines, by throwing the
light away from your skin. Use a more sparing application of loose face
powder than you would have used when you were younger, as powder can
accentuate lines, and make the skin drier. For a lighter application,
you can apply it with a powder brush instead of a powder puff. Lightly
apply blusher to the apples of your cheeks, in a colour close to the
colour your cheeks turn naturally after exercising or when pinched.
This will give you a more youthful radiance.

|
- How do I make my nose appear narrower?
Apply shader (or powder a shade darker than your
skin), down the outer sides of the bridge of your nose, and blend gently.
Then apply highlighter (or powder a shade lighter than your skin) down
the middle of the bridge of your nose, and blend gently.

|
- How do I apply eye make-up without it running,
if I have watery eyes due to an allergy?
Taking an antihistamine tablet may help. Using eye drops, and then pressing
the excess water out of your eyes, before you apply your make-up may
help. Just apply eyeshadow to your top eyelids. Don't apply eyeliner,
and don't apply eyeshadow to you lower eyelids, as it may run. If your
eyelashes are naturally dark, you could use clear colourless mascara,
which will help define your eyelashes, but without causing any visible
streaks, if your eyes run. If your eyelashes are fair, and you wish
to darken them, you could use coloured waterproof / run proof mascara.
Only apply coloured mascara to your top eyelashes, as it may run from
your lower eyelashes. Bring your make-up with you, so that you can re-touch
your eyes if necessary. Bring some cotton buds for wiping away bits
of eye make-up that have run, as their thin tips provide good accuracy.
|
- How do I pluck my eyebrows properly?
You should only pluck away the few stray hairs
which grow lower than your eyebrows, and the few hairs in between the
two eyebrows. Do not pluck hairs from above your eyebrows, or you will
ruin their natural contour. To find out where your eyebrows should begin,
put a ruler on your face in a completely vertical line going upwards
from the inner corners of your eyes, to your eyebrows. Each eyebrow
should start in vertical alignment with the inner corner of the eye
below it. Pluck hairs away from between these two points. To find out
where each eyebrow should end, line a ruler up with the outer corner
of your left nostril, passing via the outer corner of your left eye,
to the outer end of your left eyebrow. The point at which the ruler
comes up to on the outer end of your left eyebrow is where your left
eyebrow should end. Pluck away hairs which grow beyond this point. Now
do the symmetrical procedure for your right eyebrow. Do not try to make
your eyebrows pencil line thin. This was the fashion in past decades,
but the modern fashion is for thicker, more natural looking eyebrows.
So be very careful not to get carried away with the tweezers!

|
- How do I make-up a very dry skin, whilst caring
for it?
Use skin care products specially formulated for
dry skin. (A good moisturiser is essential before applying your make-up).
Then apply a moisturising cream foundation, and then concealer. You
might be better off without powder, depending on how dry your skin is,
as powder can make the skin drier.
|
- How do I make-up a very oily skin, for a matte
finish, whilst caring for it?
Use skin care products specially formulated for
oily skin. Then apply a matte oil-free liquid foundation, and then
concealer. (Use concealer which is oil-free and medicated to clear spots
if you get them. You can get these concealers from Lancôme, Lancaster
and Clearasil). Next apply loose powder to your face. If your skin becomes
shiny again later in the day, you can re-touch your face with compressed
powder.

|
- How do I give a hint of colour to alabaster
skin?
If you have alabaster skin, your skin may be too
fair to look natural in even the lightest shade of bronzing powder.
Instead apply some baby pink blusher to the apples of your cheeks, to
give a pretty 'English rose' look. Use baby pink or rosy pink lipstick
too, to brighten up your face.
|
- How do I give a healthy look to dark black
skin?
Make sure that your foundation, concealer and
powder are matched to the colour of your skin. (However concealer for
hiding dark circles under the eyes should be a shade lighter). Fashion
Fair make good make-up for black skin. The base make-up should have
enough deep red and yellow in it, otherwise your skin could look ashen.
For blusher use highly pigmented dark or vivid colours such as burgundy
or deep fuchsia. Matching your lipstick to your blusher will look good,
and will brighten up your face.

|
- How do I lift the appearance of droopy eyes?
Apply a light eyeshadow over your top eyelids,
as well as below your lower lash lines, sweeping it up slightly, extending
from the outer corners of your eyes. Apply extra coats of mascara on
the lashes just above the irises of your eyes, to draw attention to
the centres of your eyes, rather than the outer corners.

|
- How do I hide thread veins, birthmarks,
moles, pigmentation marks, scars, port wine stains and blemishes?
Using a thin tipped concealer brush for precision,
apply maximum coverage concealer (matching the colour of your skin)
over these, and then blend the edges of the concealer in gently with
a finger, so that it isn't visible. Then gently pat loose powder over
the top to fix the concealer in place. Now gently brush away the excess
loose powder with a powder brush.
(Some of these skin imperfections can be permanently removed with a
laser, but it can be expensive).
To keep pigmentation marks to a minimum, use moisturiser with sunscreens,
and sunblock whenever you go out. If you are prone to thread veins avoid
extremes of temperature and excessive alcohol consumption, and don't
use facial scrubs too hard. At times when you may be prone to stretch
marks (e.g. during pregnancy), moisturise your skin on your body daily
after washing, as it will help keep the skin more elastic, reducing
the chance of stretch marks.

|
- How do I get rid of dry skin on my lips?
Gently exfoliate the skin on your lips with a
toothbrush's bristles at night before you go to bed, and then generously
apply some vaseline to your lips. Use lipstick with sunscreens and moisturisers
during the day, and use vaseline over the top to help combat dryness,
(and to give a glossy look if you want).

|
- How do I prevent mascara from becoming flaky?
Replace your mascara every few months. When mascara
becomes flaky it usually means that as a result of time it has dried
out. Never pump the mascara wand in and out of the tube vigorously before
using it, as this makes the mascara dry out faster, by pumping more
air into it.

- How do I save money when buying make-up?
Some items have more than one use, so buying them
is cheaper than buying more items:
1) Vaseline can be used as lip balm. Used on top of any lipstick it
works like a lip gloss. It can be used elsewhere on the face to give
a hint of shine, such as on the cheekbones or brow bones. Vaseline can
also rescue very dry and sensitive lips or skin. It may be too oily
for oily skin though.
2) Some powder blushers can double up as eyeshadows, and some eyeshadows
can double up as powder blushers.
3) Some cream blushers can double up as lipsticks, and some lipsticks
can double up as cream blushers. Plus it looks good to match your lipstick
to your blusher.
4) Instead of buying new lipsticks, you could mix two or more old lipsticks
together to create your own colours.
5) On olive skin or dark oriental skin, terra cotta bronzing powder can
double up as blusher for contouring the cheekbones.
6) Mascara can double up as liquid eyeliner. Stick an eyeliner brush
into your mascara tube, and you can use it as eyeliner.
7) Eyebrow pencil can double up as kohl pencil, but it gives a softer
effect than kohl pencil.
8) If you can't afford to buy base make-up in many colours for different
models, just buy the lightest shade, the darkest shade, and about seven
or eight shades in between. If you don't have the right colour for a
model, you can mix two or more colours together to get the colour that
matches their skin.
9) If you can't afford to buy an eyebrow brush, a toothbrush will do
the same job.
10) Some of the cheaper brands of make-up perform just as well as the
more expensive brands. L'oréal Perfection and Max Factor make good mascaras.
Barry M make good loose eyeshadows in little round pots called 'Dazzle
Dust', and some of them can also be used as blushers. Rimmel make good
kohl pencils. Max Factor make good lipsticks. (If you wanted to buy
only a few items from a more expensive brand, it's worth spending more
money on foundation, concealer and powder, in order to get them with
good benefits to your skin, such as sunscreens, anti-ageing ingredients,
vitamins, and so that it's picked to suit your skin type, and match
your skin colour. [Prescriptives, Clarins and Lancôme are good for most
skin types and colours. Fashion Fair is good for black or Indian skins).

- How do I make attractive eyes more of a
focus point?
Apply some highlighter or pale coloured eyeshadow
to your brow bones right up to your eyebrows. (Use white on fair skin,
or cream on dark skin). Now apply a dark or bright coloured eyeshadow
over your top eyelids. Then apply it under your lower lash lines, or
use eyeliner. Apply mascara to your eyelashes. Apply false eyelashes
too, if you like. Keep the lips subtle with pale or nude colours.

- How do I make attractive lips more of a
focus point?
Keep the eye make-up subtle. Apply a tiny touch
of highlighter or shimmery powder to the skin just above the lip line
of the Cupid's bow of your top lip using a thin tipped brush. Now apply
some bright coloured lipstick. Then draw a thin line around the edges
of your lips with a lip liner pencil to emphasize their shape, and to
get the shape perfect. Lastly apply some lip gloss to your lips. Apply
extra lip gloss to the middle of your lower lip, as it looks lighter
here, as this is the part of your lips that the light hits most.

- How do I discover my own signature make-up
style?
Decide which your most attractive features are,
and use make-up to make them stand out more. For example, if you have
striking colour eyes, you could use eye make-up to contrast their colour,
to make their colour stand out more. If you have beautiful shape lips,
you could use perfectly applied bright red lipstick to make them stand
out more. If you have beautiful shape eyes, you could emphasize them
with eyeliner. If you have good bone structure, you could highlight
your cheekbones with blusher or shimmer. Discover which colours best
flatter your colouring, and use them to make the most of it. (Click

- How do I create a sexy evening look?
Apply a flawless base. Apply black or charcoal
eyeshadow and / or eyeliner. Extend it past the outer corners of your

- How do I wear make-up for going to the beach
/ playing sports?
Tinted moisturiser with SPF. (Bring a separate waterproof sunblock for
re-applying when needed). Concealer just where needed. Waterproof mascara.
Bright coloured lipstick which contains SPF. Bronzing powder for a sun-kissed
glow (depending on your skin colour). You can bring a spray atomiser
filled with water for to spritz your face with, to cool and refresh
it, and give your skin a fresh dewy look.

- How do I make up fair eyelashes?
Use brown mascara instead of black, for a more natural look. Start right
from the roots of your eyelashes when applying mascara, otherwise they
will be lighter at the roots. Coat the upper sides as well as the undersides
of your eyelashes with mascara, so that the eyelashes look brown all
over. Apply a few coats of mascara, and then comb through your eyelashes
with an eyelash comb to separate them and remove any clumps. If you
find it hard to coat the roots of your top eyelashes with mascara, apply
brown liquid eyeliner (matched to the colour of your mascara) along
your top lash lines, before or after applying mascara. If there are small
parts of the eyelashes that you still find hard to cover with mascara,
touch over them with liquid eyeliner matched to the colour of your mascara,
and then comb through your eyelashes.

- How do I know which colours will suit me
for eyes, lips and cheeks, if my hair has turned grey?
If you have light skin, (including alabaster,
fair and light oriental skin), you should suit most pastel eyeshadows,
such as baby pinks, baby blues, lilacs, and light greens. Baby pinks
and light rose pinks should suit you for blusher and lipstick. If you
have medium skin, (including tan, olive, deep oriental, and light Indian
skin), you should suit warm pinks, purples, gold, mid blues and mid
greens for eyeshadow. Tawny pinks and warm pinks should suit you for
blusher and lipstick. If you have dark skin, (including black and dark
Indian skin), you should suit highly pigmented bright and deep pinks,
bright and deep blues, bright and deep greens, bright and deep purples,
and bright and deep gold for eyeshadow. Highly pigmented bright and
deep pinks should suit you for blusher and lipstick. Plus all skin tones
with grey hair suit red lipstick. However, you must choose the correct
shade of red. Cool skin tones suit cool reds, such as blue-toned reds,
while warm skin tones suit warm reds, such as orangey-reds. If you skin
is very dark, you will suit deep shades of red, such as wine.

- How do I even out the colour of black skin,
if it is uneven?
Sometimes the forehead and chin can be darker than the cheeks. To even
them out, firstly find a foundation matched to the colour of your skin
on your jaw line. (If it is the right colour, it should be practically
invisible on your jaw line). Apply this foundation all over your face,
and blend it in well. Apply some foundation a shade lighter (than the
foundation matched to your jaw line), to your forehead and chin, to
make the colour closer to that of your cheeks and jaw line. If you have
dark circles under your eyes, apply concealer one shade lighter than
the foundation on your cheeks, to the skin under your eyes, and blend
it in gently. Blend the foundations and concealer together, so that
the skin looks natural. Now apply loose face powder, which is matched
to the colour of your skin on your jaw line, all over your face, using
a powder puff, and then brush the excess powder off of your face with
a powder brush, using downward strokes. (Make sure the base make-up
has enough colour in it, so that it doesn't make your skin appear ashy).
Fashion Fair make good base make-up for black skin.

- How do I clean my make-up tools?
Wipe the excess make-up off of your make-up brushes
onto some tissue. Then run their hairs under some water, lather them
with anti-bacterial liquid soap, and then rinse them really well under
running water. Wring the excess water out of them. Dry them on tissue.
Leave them to stand, hairs side up, in a jar, to let them dry properly
overnight. (This is important to prevent eye and / or skin infections
from spreading. It also ensures that the colours you use come out as
intended, as they won't be mixed with residual colour on the brushes
from another colour you previously applied). Powder puffs can be washed
in the washing machine. Use disposable cosmetic sponges. Use a separate
cosmetic sponge for each model, so that eye and / or skin infections
don't get spread.

- How do I prepare, remove make-up, and look
after my skin?
Cleanse, tone and moisturise your face in the morning, before putting
your make-up on, and also at night, to remove your make-up before going
to bed. To cleanse, and to remove make-up, pour some cleanser onto some
cotton wool or tissue, and wipe it over your face. If you find it hard
to remove eyeliner and mascara from around your eyes, dip a cotton bud
into some eye make-up remover, and run it along your lash lines. Then
rinse with water. Cream cleanser is good for dry / sensitive skin. Lotion
cleanser and foaming gel cleanser are good for oily / combination /
normal skin. Medicated lotion cleanser and medicated foaming gel cleanser
are good for spot-prone skin. To tone, pour toner onto cotton wool or
tissue, and wipe it all over your face. Rose water makes a good toner
for dry / sensitive / normal skin. Witch hazel makes a good toner for
oily / combination / spot-prone skin. To moisturise, apply dots of moisturiser
onto your face, and rub it in with your fingertips. Use a protective
moisturiser with SPF in the daytime, to protect against skin ageing,
and to help your foundation glide on more easily. Use a nourishing night
moisturiser at night. Cream moisturiser is good for dry / sensitive
/ normal skin. Lotion moisturiser is good for oily / combination / normal
skin. Medicated lotion moisturiser is good for spot-prone skin. If you
get allergic reactions, only use products which are hypo-allergenic
and fragrance free. You can use separate eye gel or eye cream, to keep
the skin around your eyes looking young. Exfoliate your face with facial
scrub about twice a week, after cleansing, but before toning and moisturising.
It will lift off dead skin cells, and leave your skin smoother. (Never
exfoliate eczema and sunburn though, as your skin will be too sensitive).
You can use a face mask once or twice a week for many purposes such
as drawing out impurities, moisturising, anti-ageing, or calming your
skin. Use one that is made for your skin type, and read the instructions,
so that you leave it on for the correct amount of time. For clearing
spots, you can put a bit of toothpaste or tea tree oil onto them before
going to bed at night. To maintain healthy skin, eat a healthy diet
with fresh fruit and vegetables, drink plenty of water, stay away from
sun beds, and don't smoke!

- How do I create freckles, if I don't have
them?
Use an eyebrow pencil with a well sharpened end
to draw freckles onto your face, on places such as the bridge of your
nose and the tops of your cheeks. On light skin use a light brown eyebrow
pencil, and on dark skin use a dark brown eyebrow pencil. (Eyebrow pencil
will give a softer more natural look than kohl pencil). Twist the eyebrow
pencil round as you press it onto your face, to create regular shape
freckles.

- How do I elongate round eyes?
Apply dark eyeshadow and / or eyeliner to your top eyelids and below
your lower lash lines, and extend it out past the outer corners of your

- How do I make narrow eyes look rounder?
Apply white kohl pencil to the inner rims of your
lower eyelids. Apply light or bright coloured eyeshadow to your top
eyelids, as well as under your lower lash lines. Do not extend it past
the outer corners of your eyes at all. Curl your top eyelashes. Apply
mascara (and false eyelashes too, if you want), to both top and bottom
eyelashes.

- How do I prevent the flash from bleaching out the face in photos?
On fair skin use foundation, concealer and powder with a slightly yellow tone.
Afterwards apply some blusher to the fronts of the cheeks, or lightly brush some
light bronzing powder over the bridge of your nose, tops of your cheeks, and a
bit on your forehead. On medium / olive skin use your usual foundation, concealer
and powder which match your skin colour. Afterwards lightly apply some medium
/ dark bronzing powder over the bridge of your nose, tops of your cheeks, and
a bit on your forehead.

|
- How do I get the make-up colours and skin tone to come out as intended
in photos?
Ask the photographer whether he / she is shooting in Kodak film or Fuji Film.
Kodak film makes the colours slightly redder / warmer. Fuji Film makes the colours
slightly greener / cooler. So with Kodak film go easily with warm colours and
go slightly stronger with cool colours, whilst with Fuji Film go easily with
cool colours, and go slightly stronger with warm colours. With Kodak film use
slightly yellow toned foundation, concealer and powder to prevent it coming
out pinkish. With Fuji Film use slightly warmer tones than you would usually
use of blusher and / or bronzing powder to prevent a cold or washed out appearance.

- How do I hide / reduce the appearance of dark circles under the eyes?
Apply Yves Saint Laurent’s ‘Radiant Touch’ or concealer
(which is one shade lighter than your skin) quite heavily to the skin
below your eyes, using a concealer brush. Then blend it, by gently patting it with a finger. Next lock it in place by applying loose powder over the top, using
a powder brush or powder puff, and then gently brush away the excess
powder using a powder brush. If your dark circles are still visible,
blusher and lipstick will take the focus away from dark circles.

- How do I apply make-up for a bride or bridesmaid?
Apply perfect foundation, concealer and powder. Go for pretty soft pastel colours
for your eyes, lips and cheeks, which match or compliment your dress, flowers
and your colouring. Groom your eyebrows, and apply mascara (and false eyelashes
if you want).

- How do I apply make-up for a prom / ball?
Apply perfect foundation, concealer and powder. Make sure your eyebrows are
perfectly groomed. If you are young (i.e. in your pre-teens), you don’t
need to wear much make-up. Some glitter eyeshadow and mascara may be all you
need for your eyes. If you are older though, you are still young but wish to
look older, or you are going for a more sophisticated look, try using dark eyeshadows
to define your eyes, mascara (and false eyelashes if you want). If your dress
is red, pink, orange, or coral, wear lipstick to match your dress. If your dress
is another colour, wear lipstick in a colour that makes you look pretty, and
compliments your dress and your colouring. (Click on the ‘Guide’
icon below for a colour guide). You can make your face, hair and body glittery
by applying glittery powder to them with a large powder puff. (Try ‘Kitten’
powder from Benefit).

- How do I apply make-up for black and white photos?
Black and white pictures create a contrasting effect between dark and light
colours. This gives good definition. So focus on defining your best features
well. Firstly make sure your skin looks perfect with foundation, concealer and
powder matched to the colour of your skin. If you have black or dark Indian
skin, use foundation, concealer and powder that are a bit paler than your skin,
to create contrast with the colour of your eyes, lips, eyebrows, cheek colour
etc (depending on which feature(s) you intend to make the focus point), to give
them better definition. Shading and / or lining your eyes, with dark colours
such as black or dark grey, will create good definition and contrast. Well defined
eyebrows can be a strong and dramatic feature. Use black eyebrow pencil if your
eyebrows are naturally dark. If your eyebrows are fair use dark brown eyebrow
pencil to make them stand out more. Red and / or dark lipstick will come out
looking almost black, so will be very effective. Be sure to use a lip liner
pencil after applying lipstick to get the shape of your lips perfect. Bone structure
shows up well in black and white photos. If you apply shader or dark blusher
below the cheekbones, it will emphasize cheekbones. The effect will be dramatic
and effective. Pay attention to precision here, as make-up which is out of line
shows up a lot with contrasting colours.

- How do I choose a colour palette to make me look younger?
Older skin usually looks younger with soft warm colours, as they create a glow
and a softening effect, thereby making lines / wrinkles look softer. If you
are going to have your photo taken, warm light (i.e. yellow light) will soften
lines / wrinkles, whereas cool light (i.e. white light) will make lines / wrinkles
show up more, so opt for warm light. On light skin warm pinks, apricots, peaches,
salmons, and corals will work well for lipstick and blusher. Soft (not garish)
gold, and autumn shades will create a soft effect on your eyes. Darker skins
can simply take darker or more intense versions of the above colours.

- How do I apply make-up with eczema / very reactive skin?
Firstly apply hypo-allergenic moisturiser such as Aqueous cream, Eucerin, Oilatum
or E45, or if you have a prescription cream use it as directed. Crème
de la Mer can also help. Only apply hypo-allergenic concealer to small areas
that need it such as dark circles or pimples, but do not put it on eczema. Do
not wear foundation and powder until your skin has recovered (unless you need
to). Look for hypo-allergenic ranges such as Almay and Clarins. Now groom your
eyebrows (and define them with eyebrow pencil if you need to), and put on some
mascara and lipstick and / or lip gloss. If you react badly to lipsticks and
/ or lip glosses, just apply Vaseline to moisturise your lips and give a glossy
look. Avoid perfume as well until your skin recovers. If you have a reaction
to a product, wash it off and don’t use it again.

|
- How do I conceal coloured scars and bruises?
Find a concealer closely matched to the colour of your skin, but with a hint
of yellow. (Yellow cancels out purple as it is the opposite colour in the spectrum
to it). Apply it using a thin tipped brush for precision. Pat it gently with
your finger so that it doesn't’t show, and then fix in place with loose
powder. Then brush away the excess loose powder using a powder brush.

|
- How do I obtain the perfect colours, if I don't have them?
By mixing colours together. To obtain the perfect shade of foundation, mix two or more foundations together thoroughly on the back of your hand, using a cotton bud. Then try a bit on the model's jaw line. If it's the right colour, it should disappear into the skin. To obtain the perfect shade of loose powder, shake two or more loose powders together thoroughly in a powder pot, with the lid on. To obtain the perfect shade of eyeshadow, blusher or lipstick, apply one colour, and then apply another colour(s) over the top.

- How do I achieve a softer lined effect around my eyes?
There are three ways of doing this. Firstly, after applying kohl pencil, you can blend or smudge it gently with a cotton bud. Secondly, after applying kohl pencil (and blending or smudging it with a cotton bud if you want), you can apply eyeshadow over the top of the kohl pencil. Thirdly, you can line your eyes with eyeshadow instead of kohl pencil. Apply it right up to your lash lines. with a thin tipped eyeshadow brush for precision.

|
- How do I create a porcelain effect with my base?
You can only achieve a porcelain effect on fair skin. Apply foundation and concealer matched to the colour of the skin. Then before applying loose face powder, mix it thoroughly with some talcum powder, to make it a shade paler than the skin. Then apply this all over the face using a powder puff, then brush away excess powder using a powder brush.

|
- How do I give my base a dewy look?
After applying foundation, concealer and powder (and possibly blusher), spritz your face with a spray atomizer filled with water. Hold it at arms length when you spritz your face, in order to ensure an even coverage. Alternatively, get into a hot steamy bath after applying your make-up. The steam will condense on your face to give a similar effect.
|
- How do I avoid looking overly made up?
Firstly, make sure that your base make-up looks natural. (See the first question: 'How do I achieve a natural looking base?'). Secondly, either make your lip make-up light and go stronger with your eye make-up, or alternatively make your eye make-up light and go stronger with your lip make-up. Don't make both your eye make-up and your lip make-up strong together.

- How do I create a mask?
Apply strips of masking tape around the sides of your face, where you intend the mask to end. This will create a border for you to paint the skin inside. Blend an opaque panstick over your face within this border, using a cosmetic sponge. Make-up For Ever panstick works well for this. Make sure that you have applied the panstick evenly and smoothly, so that there are no streaks. Next dust loose powder (in a colour matched to that of the panstick) over the top with a powder puff, to set the panstick in place, and to give a matte finish. Then gently brush away the excess powder with a powder brush, using downward strokes. If you are going for a geisha-style mask (i.e. a white mask), talcum powder works just as well as white loose powder. If you can't find a loose powder in the right colour, crush some eyeshadow (in the same colour as the panstick) into a fine powder, and use that as loose powder. To obtain a paler shade of that colour powder, mix it thoroughly with some talcum powder before applying it. To obtain other colour powders for other colour masks, thoroughly mix together different colour crushed up eyeshadows. After you have applied the panstick and powder, peel away the strips of masking tape from around the sides of the face, and you will be left with a mask with a perfect clean edge around it.

- How do I make my eyebrows seem in a different position or a different shape, without having to remove them?
Apply a very opaque panstick or concealer (matched to the colour of the skin on your face) over your eyebrows to block them out, using a concealer brush. (Make-up For Ever make opaque pansticks that work well for this). Then apply loose powder in the same colour over the top, and gently brush away the excess powder with a powder brush. Now that your eyebrows are hidden, you can draw them on in a different position or shape to how they are naturally, using eyebrow pencil for a natural look, or using kohl pencil for a sharper look. You can draw them on higher up, lower down, more arched, straighter across, slanting upwards, thinner, thicker etc. Be sure to draw the eyebrows on symmetrically to each other though.

- How do I create rosebud lips?
Apply concealer or panstick (the same colour as the skin and / or the base make-up on the face) over the outer two thirds of the lips (left and right), to block them out. Then fix this in place with loose powder, and brush away the excess powder. Now paint the middle third of the lips with lipstick and / or lip gloss, accentuating the shape of the Cupid's bow of the top lip, and making the bottom lip look rounded. Put extra lipstick and / or lip gloss in the centre of the bottom lip, as this is where the light hits the lips the most. Alternatively, paint the whole of the lips with pale pink lip gloss, next apply darker pink or red lip gloss only to the middle third of your lips, accentuating the shape of the Cupid's bow of the top lip, and making the bottom lip look rounded.

- How do I make up the eyes of someone who is wearing contact lenses?
When applying eyeshadow and / or eyeliner it is important that you don't press too hard on their eyelids. Press very gently, using the flat of the brush, and be careful not to get flecks of eyeshadow into the model's eyes. It is best to avoid mascara with filaments, and only use mascara which says that it is suitable for sensitive eyes and / or contact lens wearers.

- How do I draw on a fake beauty spot?
Best results are achieved by using either a black liquid eyeliner pen, or a black kohl pencil. With the black liquid eyeliner pen gently touch it onto your face where you want the beauty spot to be, and twist the end of the liquid eyeliner pen round on your face, that way ensuring that the beauty spot will be a regular round shape. The same technique is used with the black kohl pencil, only by pressing slightly harder than with the black liquid eyeliner pen.

- How do I choose a regular lipstick colour?
One way would be by finding a lipstick which matches your blusher (matched to the colour your cheeks turn naturally after exercising or when pinched). This way your lipstick and blusher are guaranteed to suit your skin tone, plus it usually looks best when your lipstick and blusher co-ordinate. Another way would be by choosing a lipstick which goes nicely with your hair colour. For example, a brunette might suit a plum coloured lipstick, a redhead might suit an orangey-red coloured lipstick, and a blonde might suit a baby pink coloured lipstick. Another way would be by finding a lipstick which matches or goes nicely with an outfit of yours. That way you're bound to wear that lipstick when you're wearing that outfit.

- How do I add sparkle to any loose powder, eyeshadow, blusher, or lipstick?
Get some fine glitter powder. 'Kitten' powder from Benefit, and Paillettes-Glitter from Fardel are both good for this. - How do I know when to use loose powder and when to use compressed powder, and what's the difference between the two?
Loose powder should be used the first time you apply powder (i.e. directly after you've applied foundation and concealer). It sets the foundation and concealer in place, and stops the skin looking shiny. It is more effective at eliminating shine than compressed powder, as it does not contain any wax, whereas compressed powder contains wax to hold it together. If you were to apply compressed powder directly after foundation and concealer, you would not get such an even result as with loose powder. After applying loose powder you should brush off the excess powder with a powder brush, however this is not necessary with compressed powder. However if your skin gets shiny again later in the day, compressed powder is easier to carry around in your handbag and use for touch ups in public than loose powder.

- How do I minimize the appearance of enlarged pores?
Firstly make sure you maintain a good skin care routine. (See previous question: 'How do I prepare my skin for make-up, remove make-up, and look after my skin?'). - How do I make my eyes look more mysterious?
Apply black, grey, brown, blue or green kohl pencil to the inner rims of your lower eyelids. Apply matching colour mascara. Alternatively, cat-eye style dark eyeshadow works with dark kohl pencil on the inner rims of your lower eyelids, and mascara, (and false eyelashes, if you want). You can stick a stick-on diamonté or crystal to the inner corner of each eye, using false eyelash glue to stick them in place. (Make-up For Ever make stick-on diamontés, and Swarovski make stick-on crystals called 'Crystal Tattoo'). (If your eyes are small, don't apply dark kohl pencil to the inner rims of your lower eyelids, as this would make your eyes look too small).
